This hilly section of south Madison is one of the metro area’s premier residential neighborhoods. Separated from the rest of the city by the Beltline Highway, which runs east-west just north of the community, Arbor Hills was originally considered too isolated to develop, but the area’s beautiful natural setting eventually won out and attracted homeowners. Slow development through the 1960s and 70s in Arbor Hills produced a spacious, well laid-out neighborhood where residents now enjoy suburban living at its best.
Residents of Arbor Hills have a tradition of raising funds for community beautification projects and public amenities. Foremost among community action groups is the Arbor Hills Garden Club, established in 1962, which has spurred the development of many parks, playgrounds, and boulevard enhancements. Arbor Hills’ largest and most popular public green spaces are Knollwood Conservation Park, off Knollwood Way, and Arbor Hills Park, at the neighborhood’s center.
Arbor Hills is comprised almost entirely of single family homes, although a section of condos and multi-family units can be found on Todd Drive.
